What is the equity research challenge about?

Participants will research into companies, following a more data-driven process. This will be a great opportunity to get exposed to quantamental research and also a useful learning experience for those considering careers in investment!

Open to graduates (Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD) from 2021 - 2026 

Open to Individual and Group (up to 3 people) participation

Participants should have some financial background/knowledge (e.g. understanding financial statements, financial modelling, valuation etc.)

Round 1: Report

- 1 July 2024 at 0800 (GMT +8): Release of competition questions (choose 1 out of 3 questions) and instructions via email 

- 28 July 2024 at 2359 (GMT +8): Final report due date

- 16 August 2024: Release of shortlist for Round 2 

Sample Question 1: Estimate Company A's next quarter Sales and EPS. Please show the detailed process.

Sample Question 2: Most of the recent market discussion has been surrounding the resurgence of commodities and supply-chain disruption. Gas and NGLs broke out in mid-August with the crude also following the suit more recently. However, firms within the Energy Sector would not enjoy the same benefits during the up-trend wave and strong divergence will be observed due to the heterogeneous business nature, supply-demand structure of underlying commodities and strategic reserves.

Provide detailed analysis of risk factors/drivers and follow-up implication on targeted energy-sector firm pairs: Exxon Mobil (XOM) versus ConocoPhillips (COP), each has different exposure to commodity movements. Based on the stated assumptions, underlying drivers and any specific circumstances in the analysis, present short-term and long-term relative forecasts to company’s Sales and EPS and corresponding share prices.

Round 2: Presentation

Our Fundamental Research Team will shortlist around 5 finalists from Round 1 and they will have around a week to prepare for their presentation.
